Velcade and ONJ

by laetetia on Wed Nov 16, 2011 11:00 pm

Has anyone who suffered osteonecrosis as a result of biphosphonates gone on to be treated with Velcade and if so, did they experience jaw pain while on the treatment ?

Hi, yes I do have osteonecrosis in my jaw and went on to take Velcade twice after. My jaw pains every so often, but no more pain while on Velcade.Hope this helps! :)

Thanks. Must be the other tablets causing the pain then. The Valaciclovir RBX. I think they were supposed to boost his immunity but the side effects listed for it include tooth disorders, swelling of the mouth and lips, oral ulcers etc. I made him stop taking them but his jaw (or what's left of it anyway) still hurts and he hasn't really had any pain in years.

Dear Laetetia,

I would think that valtrex would be an unusual cause of jaw pain. Velcade should not do this either, unless he was left with a component of chronic nerve-related pain from his original osteonecrosis of the jaw and the nerve pain has been rekindled by the Velcade (I am speculating here). I would let his doctor(s) know. A new visit to the dentist and possible imaging (x-rays) of the area may be in order.

Good luck!

Pete

Thank you for your reply. He got his second injection of Velcade Subq. about 8 hours ago. He hasn't taken the other tablets any more. He hasn't had jaw pain in years. Now the side of his face where he had the ONJ is totally swollen and he's in pain.

When he mentioned to his doctor before the injection he said it was unexpected but did seem to think it might be the Velcade.
