Today is D-1 of my transplant. A day of rest.
I'm not real peppy, but all is reasonably well.

Re: Stem Cell Transplant
Best wishes Chip,
Rest up, I didn't really start to feel the effects till around day 4. Then it was a down hill slide. But I had 4 great years of C R.
As Pat has said, if it works it is all worth it. And it was.

Re: Stem Cell Transplant
Good Luck Chip! If you don't mind me asking, what is your protein level going into this? My husband is scheduled for his SCT on Sept. 28th and he has stalled out at 1.6 which isn't what they were hoping for. They are thinking maybe another transplant 3 months after this one. BUMMER
Please keep me posted on progress. I hope everything goes great for you!

Re: Stem Cell Transplant
Hi Chip,
I had my first SCT in June. All in all it was not bad at all for me. I had 3 days where it was a struggle to leave the room and walk. I was really tired and sort of depressed. I didn't want to listen to the radio. So I just left the mindless sports channel on.
But the rest of the time was no big deal. The worst part of walking the hallways was smelling everybody's food-ha.
I went from an Mspike of 2.0 to 0.8. And IGG is normal now. I'm going in for second one in a few weeks. I hope to hammer Mspike down to zero.
Good luck to you.

Re: Stem Cell Transplant
Hi Stan,
Good Luck to you on your 2nd SCT. My husband will have his 1st one on Sept. 28th. His M spike is at 1.6 now and they want to repeat another SCT in 3 months. He is 50 years old and in good health other than this. He was diagnosised in April. I hope everything goes well for him.

Re: Stem Cell Transplant
I'm going in for my first of tandum SCT on the 31st. Had a bad reaction to the first chemo (cytoxan and etoposide). Just concerned now with the Mephalan when I go in, with prior heart and kidney issues.
Good luck Chip

Re: Stem Cell Transplant
Hello everyone, I had a stem cell tranplant with my own stem cells last Oct. 2010. I was in the hospital for about one month. It was rough but got though it. Worse thing was not wanting to eat, and very tired. No sores in the mouth for the meds, which I was afraid of getting. They do have meds for this condition. Few other things happened but no to bad.
My doctor had me on Revlimid for a few month but was effecting my kidney and took me off. Right now on nothing yet. I feel very well and things are going well. Use to get wicked pains from my neuropathy from the chemo before stem cell but have very few problems now. I am on 300 mg of Gabapentin and this stuff called PhysAssist, it is a creme, I rub it on before bed and can sleep the night, sometime I get a charlehorse in my calf but I stand up ,it helps it to go away.
My question: Is it really necessary for the ladies to get the Mammo after have all the chemo from a stem cell transplant? Will it kill those cells off? Can it kick up the cancer cells again in the body fron this x-ray? thank-you
Good health to all Linda

Re: Stem Cell Transplant
My husband had a transplant with his own cells in 2001. His paraprotein level was 28. After the operation it ranged from 4 - 6 so not gone completely but they took him off medication. He was medication free for 10 years. It took about 9 years for his level to go up to 10 again at which time they say you have to start treatment. He waited. When his level got to 14 he took thalidomide from a month which dropped it down to 12. He stopped thalidomide. it went up to 15. Now his doctor is starting him on Velcade.
But he has had 10 years of normal life without taking anything but painkillers for back pain. He has held down a full time job and while he gets tired, he's ok. Was the stem cell transplant worth it ? Most definitely. And he has enough cells left over to do a second one down the track. He's now 63.
Good luck and stay positive.
