Pre- stem-cell-collection oddity

by Snip on Tue Aug 30, 2011 10:39 am

I am in the phase of my ASCT process where the stem-cells are multiplying... they get collected this coming Thursday.

I'd been warned that there was to be some pain associated with this step of the process, as the pressure of the stem-cell replication would affect my bones. That finally happened yesterday, in waves. Very odd. Very unpleasant. Controlled it with the morphine they sent home with me.

This morning? Nothing. No pain at all. I haven't taken a painkiller since 9PM yesterday, so that's not the reason.

Is this a usual occurrence, that this pressure pain would be for one day only?

This sounds very similar to my experience. I had one afternoon with fairly intense pain from the neupogen as the stem cells were multiplying in my bone marrow. I called the transplant nurse and she suggested tylenol which actually worked amazingly well. I was fine after that.

John, I had my SCT out patient in 2007. I was hospitalized the weekend before with fever. Within hours I had the worst pain in my life ( and I've had 2 knee replacements since too). The awful pain was the stem cell accumulating in my back. I produced around 36 million cells and needed only 2 hours to collect enough for transplant and storage. Good luck. Linda

From others on this site I learned about taking Claritin prior to starting Nupogen shots. EJ started taking Claritin the day before he began the shots to mobilize his stem cells, and took it until after the cells were harvested. He never had any pain!

I had pretty severe back pain for about two days after taking the neupogen shots, but it went away and never came back after that. (Very similar feeling to your experience, "Snip" )
