Vitamin D

by Sean Murray on Mon Mar 29, 2010 11:30 am

Does anyone have any specific information about multiple myeloma patients taking supplemental Vitamin D? Are there prohibitions or contraindications for Vitamin D and Velcade/Dex/Revlimid? Can you point to any studies?

I am currently in a 'maintenance' phase of treatment: 1.9mg Velcade (IV infusion) & 20mg Dex, one time per week., and 15mg Revlimid (21 days on/ 7 days off).

Thank You!

I found one small study that showed that for people with multiple myeloma and a vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D supplements can help relieve symptoms. The study was published in the British Journal of Haematology in 2008.

Another study, published in the American Journal of Hematology and covered by the Beacon (https://myelomabeacon.org/news/2009/07/25/vitamin-d-may-cause-skeletal-complications/) in July, found that people with multiple myeloma and a vitamin D deficiency had protein levels that correlate with poorer prognoses, and a supplement may help.

Overall, I didn't find any big studies yet of vitamin D's role in multiple myeloma. However, the studies I did find seemed promising. I also noticed that these studies looked at people with multiple myeloma who already had a vitamin D deficiency, so you may want to make sure you have a deficiency before you consider taking supplements. Of course, please talk to your doctor about whether you have a deficiency and whether supplements might work well for you.

I don't know of any interactions between vitamin D and Velcade, Dexamethasone or Revlimid, but that is something you should carefully check with your doctor or pharmacist.

I hope that helps!

Dr. Martha Lacy from the Mayo Clinic said:

"A recent report showing vitamin D levels predict prognosis in lymphoma has sparked a lot of interest in this area. Studies are ongoing looking at this in myeloma.

Our group recommends that everyone with multiple myeloma have baseline vitamin D levels checked. We recommend making sure you get enough calcium and vitamin D. In general, we aim for approximately 1500 mg calcium and 800-1200 international units of vitamin D per day (or prescription cholecalciferol 50,000 units once a month). If you are deficient in vitamin D, you may have to take more until your levels are replaced.

There are no specific contraindications to taking vitamin D, but patients with a history of kidney stones should check with their doctor before taking calcium supplements. As always check with your doctor for advice specific to your situation."

Someone just mentioned that I shouldn't take vitamin C with Velcade. What about vitamin D?
