Has anyone experienced blood clots/thrombosis in the arms as a results of either Aredia, Zometa, Revlimid, Dex or Velcade.
I am currently on :
Revlimid - 25mg Day 1-14 (7days off)
Sub q Velcade 1.3mg Day 1,4,8,11 (7days off)
Dex - 40mg Day 1,4,8,11 (7 days off)
Aredia - 90mg Once a month
I have only had 2 cycles so far but EACH TIME after Taking the Areda (iv) I had a swelling, heat, and pain in the vein in my forearm which was shown on the Ultrasound to be a blood clot. I have been on Arixtra (blood thinners) so my ONC is very confused as top why this has happened. On Friday I start cycle 3 but will not have Aredia and see what happens.

Re: Blood clots/thrombosis in arms
You don't mention how the aredia is delivered; is it by IV at 250 cc. per hour for 2 hours or by the
" baby bottle " which you disconnect at home yourself . The 2 times that I received it by the latter method ( once in each forearm ) I awoke 6 hours later to find that I had developed phlebitis in the forearm from wrist to elbow. My new hematologist at the time had recommended it to reduce chair time. However, with this method the line is not flushed with saline after the infusion and I feel that that is significant in causing the phlebitis in my case . I had him revert back to the 2 hour infusion with a 100 cc. flush of saline after. Over the past 15 years I have received 193 infusions by this method without ever developing phlebitis. Therefore I suggest that you ensure that you receive a saline flush after the aredia if you are not getting it at present. Although I am presently on RVd, at the time of the phlebitis I was only receiving the aredia so it is clearly the cause in my case.

Re: Blood clots/thrombosis in arms
Thanks for the reply. The Aredia was given as IV over 4 hours at the cancer center. A ferw people have mentioned about flushing the iV out afterwards, which was not done and I did not know should be done so I will insist on the nurses doing it next time.
I too belive it was the Aredia as I was on blood thinning injections and asprin..
