Low anion gap

by concerned on Mon Nov 25, 2013 10:31 pm

I have smoldering myeloma with 10-15% plasma cells, free light chain ratio @25 mg/dL, m spike 1.5

My labs have been slowly rising the past 6 months (m spike was 1.2 three months ago) . I just received my recent labs and its showing a low anion gap. Neut: High, Lymph: Low.

Does anyone know if I should be concerned?

Thanks

So, a serum anion gap measurement indicates the levels of electrolytes in your blood. The presence of paraproteins in your blood can throw off the anion gap measurement (as well as your your individual sodium and chloride measurements).

IgG tends to be positively charged. An excess IgG level can therefore cause the anion gap measurement to read artificially lower than normal.

Suggest you discuss all this with your hematologist.
