Hi Lance,

Thank you for your feedback, and sorry you've run into this problem. We just heard yesterday from someone else that they, too, got the "too few characters" message when they tried to make a posting.

Perhaps you can confirm our suspicions on this, but we think this is happening mainly when people attempt to make a posting by cutting text from some other application (for example, Microsoft Word), and then pasting it into the forum posting box. When they've done this and then hit the "submit" button, they get the "too few characters" message.

Is this basically what happened to you?

We are trying to isolate the source of the problem and then correct it. Any information you can provide us on how the problem happened to you could help us as we try to fix this problem.

We appreciate your patience as we work on this issue.

Thanks, Lance, for the extra feedback.

We think there are a couple of things you can do to avoid the problem in the future.

First, if your computer is running Windows, one thing you can try doing is pasting your text from the built-in Notepad editor. The Notepad editor strips out all formatting, so that the text you pasted into the forum posting box is pure text -- no formatting information. That seems to help.

Second, another option is, once you've pasted the text into the posting box, highlight (select) all of it, then press the "broom" ("Remove format") icon in the toolbar above the posting box. That sometimes will help avoid the problem by getting rid of any problematic formatting information that may have gotten pasted in with your text.

Hope those tips help as we try to track down a solution to this problem.

Good luck!

Hi Vince,

Thanks for letting us know some of the conditions under which you experienced this problem. It will help us diagnose and correct the issue. It would be helpful if you could also let us know whether you were using a PC or Mac and what browser you were using.

Since several people have reported this problem lately, we have temporarily turned off the editor that allows users to format text, which we know is related to the problem. So for now, forum users will not be able to change the font, add bold or italics formatting, embed hyperlinks in text, etc. But this should eliminate the “too few characters” error. Of course, if anyone continues to receive this error, please let us know.

In the mean time, we will work on fixing the issue so that users will have the ability to format their text again in the near future without running into this error.

We hope you’ll now be able post your comment without any trouble.
