Re: Stem cell transplant - what to expect?

by MrPotatohead on Sat May 27, 2017 12:39 pm

After going back and forth on the decision, I finally decided to go ahead with an autologous stem cell transplant for my multiple myeloma, after my response on Kyprolis and Darzalex began to falter.

The procedure went smoothly, but it was definitely very unpleasant.

Now, two weeks afterward, my blood counts are coming back, but I have tremendous fatigue and my already intense bone pain has considerably worsened. It's still early in my recovery, but based on my results so far, I feel that it was a bad mistake to have the procedure.

I don't really have many drug options left, so I am thinking of just stopping treatment if my symptoms don't improve.

Thank you to everyone who has told of their stem cell transplant experiences. My wife Sheryl will be going to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on Monday to start the stem cell collection process. She will stay stay one night and then come home. What I have read here, I pass on to her, as she is extremely nervous about her condition and has only recently begun to accept what God has dealt her.

Thanks again to all who shared. Chuck

Chuck,

My husband went through the process one year ago and achieved a complete remission, with still a clean bone marrow one year later. Good luck to you and your wife. I posted throughout my husband's stem cell transplant here on the Beacon ("Dear hubby's stem cell transplant"), as have many others. I found reading these threads helped me much during that time.
