What does "Abnormal Protein Band 1 - No M spike" mean?

by hopeful27 on Wed Aug 20, 2014 1:30 pm

Does this mean the myeloma is active?

Latest test said F1- Abnormal protein band 1. No M spike.

And that was it. N abnormal bands in 2 or 3.

Does anyone know what that means? Could it have to do with kidney issues? Also, kappa / lambda is all in normal ranges as well.

Thanks.

I presume this is from an SPEP. It's a little hard to know for sure without seeing the entire report, but I suspect this is just the section of the report where they would report the value of an abnormal M-protein, if one were present. So if there was an M-spike seen that measured 2.5 g/dL, it would say "Abnormal protein band 1 - 2.5 g/dL." If there is nothing seen, then it would say "Abnormal protein band 1 - No M-spike."

So I suspect this means your SPEP was negative.

Often the way these tests are reported can be confusing for a lay person, so it's always best to ask your doctor to help with interpretation if things aren't clear.

Hope this helps.
